Avocado has been a staple in my kitchen for quite some time now. I use it for breakfast, in salads, to make guacamole, or simply spread on a slice of toast. But I have to admit, the first time I thought about combining avocado with pasta, I was a little skeptical. 😁
Since then, this creamy avocado pasta has become one of my favorite recipes for those days when I want something delicious but don’t feel like spending too much time in the kitchen.
My favorite part is definitely the sauce. Avocado has such a naturally creamy texture that you don’t need heavy cream or any other creamy ingredients to make a smooth, rich pasta sauce. Garlic and fresh basil add plenty of flavor, lemon juice brings a little freshness, while sweet corn and tomatoes add a lovely balance of sweetness and acidity.
I used spaghetti for this recipe, but it works just as well with other types of pasta. And if you enjoy a little heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes makes the combination even better.
The best part? This easy avocado pasta recipe comes together in about 15 minutes. Perfect for a quick lunch or a simple weeknight dinner.
Why You’ll Love This Creamy Avocado Pasta
It’s incredibly creamy without any heavy cream. Ripe avocado creates a smooth, velvety sauce that coats the pasta beautifully. Unlike traditional cream-based pasta sauces, there’s no need to cook it separately.
It’s ready in just 15 minutes. You can prepare the avocado sauce while the pasta cooks, making this one of those recipes that requires very little planning.
It uses simple ingredients. Nothing fancy or difficult to find. If you have a couple of ripe avocados in your kitchen, chances are you already have most of the other ingredients.
It’s easy to customize. I love the combination of sweet corn and fresh tomatoes, but you can add other vegetables or finish everything with some shaved Parmesan. Just keep in mind that adding cheese makes the dish non-vegan.

Tips for Making the Best Avocado Pasta Sauce
Use Ripe Avocados
I think this is the most important tip for this recipe.
An underripe avocado won’t blend into a smooth, creamy sauce as easily, and it can have a slightly bitter taste.
I prefer avocados that give slightly when gently pressed but aren’t so ripe that they have large brown spots inside.
Don’t Heat the Avocado Sauce
Unlike most pasta sauces, avocado sauce doesn’t need to be cooked.
Simply toss it with the warm pasta, and that’s enough to gently warm everything through.
Heating the sauce directly can affect both its color and flavor, so I prefer to keep things simple and skip that step altogether.
Don’t Skip the Lemon Juice
Besides balancing the richness of the avocado, lemon juice also helps slow down oxidation.
It won’t completely prevent the sauce from turning brown, but it does make a difference.
And personally, I think avocado sauce tastes much better with a little acidity to brighten everything up.
Add Red Pepper Flakes for a Little Heat
I’ve started adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to my avocado pasta sauce, and I really love the combination.
It doesn’t need to be overly spicy. Just enough to add a little contrast to the creamy texture and mild flavor of the avocado.
If you prefer your pasta without any heat, you can easily leave them out.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Type of Pasta Works Best with Avocado Sauce?
I used Barilla No. 5 spaghetti, but almost any type of pasta will work.
Spaghetti and linguine are great choices for creamy sauces, but penne and fusilli work just as well.
I’d simply use whatever pasta I already have in my kitchen. 😁
How Can I Make Avocado Pasta Sauce Creamier?
The most important thing is to use ripe avocados. The softer and creamier they are, the easier it will be to blend them into a smooth sauce.
If the sauce feels too thick, add a little reserved pasta water and mix until you reach your preferred consistency.
The starchy pasta water helps loosen the sauce while keeping it creamy.
Can I Make Avocado Pasta Ahead of Time?
I’d recommend making this pasta right before serving.
Avocado starts to oxidize once it’s cut, and even though lemon juice helps slow down the process, the sauce can gradually lose its bright green color.
Besides, I think this pasta tastes best when it’s freshly made and the sauce is still smooth and creamy.
Can I Store Leftover Avocado Pasta in the Fridge?
Yes, although it’s not ideal.
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator and preferably eat them within 24 hours.
The sauce may darken slightly, and the pasta can absorb some of its moisture.
If you’re eating it the next day, try mixing in a splash of water to loosen the sauce and bring back some of its creaminess.
Do I Need a Blender to Make Avocado Pasta Sauce?
I used a hand blender, and the sauce turned out really smooth and creamy.
If you don’t have one, you can mash the avocado with a fork and mix it thoroughly with the other ingredients.
The texture won’t be quite as smooth, but it will still taste delicious.
