Fresh grapefruit juice is my favorite drink, so I had to try making a smoothie with it too. This time, I paired it with avocado and kiwi, with a little mint for freshness. The ingredient list is a bit longer than it would be for a glass of freshly squeezed juice, but the result is worth those few extra minutes. 🙂
This grapefruit smoothie is for anyone who enjoys a citrusy drink with a slightly bitter edge. The avocado adds body without turning it into a dessert, while the kiwi brings its own tartness. If you’re used to banana smoothies, expect something different: grapefruit is very much the main flavor here. You’ll find the quantities and full instructions in the recipe card below.
Why Try This Recipe?
First, there’s the combination of fresh citrus flavor and a creamy texture. Grapefruit on its own would make a much thinner drink, but avocado gives it body without any milk or yogurt. It’s a useful option when you want a dairy-free smoothie and enjoy fruit with a little character.
The fruit and flaxseeds also provide fiber. Since the smoothie isn’t strained, the fruit pulp stays in the drink rather than being removed. That’s part of what gives this recipe its consistency, so there’s no need to aim for the texture of a clear juice.
There’s no cooking, baking or complicated preparation involved. Most of the time goes into peeling and preparing the fruit. Nothing needs to soak overnight, and there’s no required chilling stage after blending, so you can make it close to the time you want to drink it.
I also like the way the mint adds a fresh note to a combination where the citrus could otherwise feel quite strong. It complements the grapefruit rather than changing its flavor completely. A little maple syrup adds sweetness, while the finished drink keeps its fruity, tangy character. There’s no need to turn it into a dessert in a glass.
Helpful Tips
Choose a Ripe Avocado
Use an avocado with flesh that scoops out easily and can be mashed without much effort. A hard avocado may leave little pieces in the smoothie instead of giving it a creamy consistency. More blending won’t necessarily make up for fruit that isn’t ripe enough.
Check the flesh as you prepare it, too. If it’s spoiled, choose another avocado rather than trying to blend away the problem. The quality of the fruit matters just as much as how thoroughly the ingredients are mixed.
Pay Attention to the Grapefruit
Remove the thick white pith and any tough membranes. This helps make the texture smoother and can reduce the bitterness those parts contribute. It doesn’t need to become a painstaking exercise, but you don’t want seeds or large, fibrous pieces ending up in your glass.
The grapefruit will still have its characteristic flavor. Preparing it carefully helps with the texture; it doesn’t turn it into a sweeter citrus fruit. That slightly bitter edge is part of what makes this combination different from many other fruit smoothies.
Use the Water to Adjust the Consistency
The water helps the ingredients blend and gives you a little room to adjust the thickness. The range in the recipe card allows for a small adjustment while keeping the original proportions largely the same.
Start at the lower end of that range. You can thin a thick smoothie with the remaining water, but extra blending won’t thicken one that has already been diluted too much. Check the consistency before adding the rest rather than assuming you’ll need it all.
Keep the Mint in Balance
Use fresh mint leaves and discard any thick stems. The strength of the flavor will depend on the variety of mint and the size of the leaves, so “a few leaves” won’t give exactly the same intensity every time.
The idea is for the mint to complement the fruit without taking over the whole glass. Leaving out the tougher stems also helps avoid fibrous bits in an otherwise creamy drink.
Chill the Fruit Beforehand
If you’d like a cold smoothie, chill the fruit before making it. This avoids adding extra ice that would dilute the drink as it melts. You can then prepare the smoothie when you’re ready to serve it, without adding another waiting stage afterward.
Choose a glass that’s comfortable to drink a thicker smoothie from. If you prefer a straw, a narrow one can be awkward with fruit pulp, so a wider straw is a more practical choice here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Use Ground Flaxseed?
Yes. Ground flaxseed can be used for a finer texture, keeping the same quantity as in the recipe. There’s no need to increase the amount just because you’re using it ground.
Is This Smoothie Made Without Added Sugar?
No. It contains maple syrup, which is an added sweetener. Leaving out granulated sugar doesn’t make a recipe free from added sugar. The fruit also contains naturally occurring sugars, so those two descriptions shouldn’t be confused.
Can I Replace the Grapefruit with Freshly Squeezed Juice?
For this recipe, use the peeled fruit. Replacing it with juice changes both the amount of pulp and the consistency, and I don’t have a tested ratio for that version. To keep the creamy texture shown in the photo, stick with the fruit itself.
