When Your Personal Trainer Leaves

Cartoon illustration of a woman and her husband saying goodbye to their first personal trainer as he leaves the gym.

A few months ago, I wrote about finding the courage to give the gym another chance. Then I shared a two-month update, admitting that, much to my own surprise, I was already about to buy my third gym membership. I honestly thought the hard part was behind me.

A few days ago, we received an email from the gym letting us know that *le pam-pam was leaving and that we’d be assigned a new personal trainer.

I can’t say it came as a surprise.

I already knew he was planning to leave. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

The next day, when we got to the gym, they asked us to choose a new trainer.

And that’s when it hit me.

*Le pam-pam had been our very first personal trainer.

He was there through the muscle soreness, the negotiations about the treadmill, and every single moment when I was convinced I’d never set foot in a gym again.

Without even realizing it, I’d started getting attached to him.

And I was genuinely sad to see him go.

That’s when *le husband made a comment that had me laughing.

He said I was exactly like Walden from Two and a Half Men.

If you’ve never watched the show, Walden is the kind of guy who falls in love with every woman he meets and is convinced she’s “the one.”

At one point, his therapist tells him he should have as much… meaningless sex as possible, just to stop getting attached so quickly.

It’s a slightly questionable comparison.

And yet…

He’s not wrong.

Except in my case, it isn’t about meaningless sex.

It’s about…

meaningless workouts. 😄

Looks like it’s time to meet a few more personal trainers.
