Whenever I’m craving something sweet but don’t feel like spending too much time in the kitchen, homemade cookies are always a good idea. Especially when there’s a jar of peanut butter in the pantry and some chocolate waiting to be used. 😁
This time, I went with one of my favorite combinations: peanut butter and chocolate. The peanut butter gives these cookies a slightly salty, nutty flavor that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the chocolate chips.
These peanut butter chocolate chip cookies are easy to make, require just a handful of everyday ingredients, and the dough comes together in minutes. The only part that requires a little patience is chilling the dough before baking. But it’s worth the wait!
Why You’ll Love These Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
First of all, the flavor combination. I love how the slightly salty peanut butter balances the sweetness of the chocolate, especially when using dark chocolate chips.
They’re also incredibly easy to make. No fancy equipment or complicated techniques needed. Just a mixing bowl, a mixer, and a baking sheet.
These homemade peanut butter cookies are perfect with your morning coffee, as an afternoon treat, or whenever you’re in the mood for something sweet.
And if you love chocolate as much as I do, save a few chocolate chips to press into the tops of the cookies before baking. They’ll look even better, and you’ll get a little extra chocolate in every bite. 🍫
Tips for Perfect Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
Use creamy peanut butter. I prefer smooth peanut butter for this recipe because it blends easily into the dough and gives the cookies a more even texture. If you’re using natural peanut butter, make sure to stir it well first, especially if the oil has separated.
Don’t skip chilling the dough. I know, waiting isn’t exactly fun when you’re craving freshly baked cookies. 😁 But chilling helps prevent the cookies from spreading too much in the oven and makes the dough easier to handle.
Avoid overbaking. The cookies will continue to firm up slightly as they cool. Keep an eye on the edges and let them rest on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Choose your favorite chocolate. I prefer dark chocolate because it balances the peanut butter flavor without making the cookies overly sweet. But milk chocolate chips work just as well if you prefer a sweeter cookie.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use crunchy peanut butter instead of creamy?
Yes! Crunchy peanut butter works too, although the cookies will have a slightly different texture, with little pieces of peanuts throughout.
I personally prefer creamy peanut butter because it creates a more uniform dough.
Why do I need to chill the cookie dough?
Chilling the dough helps keep the cookies from spreading too much while baking.
Since the recipe contains butter, refrigerating the dough allows the fat to firm up, helping the cookies hold their shape in the oven.
It also makes the dough easier to portion and shape.
Can I use chopped chocolate instead of chocolate chips?
Absolutely! You can chop a dark chocolate bar into small pieces and use it instead of chocolate chips.
I actually love this option because you get different-sized chocolate chunks throughout the cookies.
How do I store peanut butter chocolate chip cookies?
Once the cookies have cooled completely, store them in an airtight container at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight.
For the best texture and flavor, I recommend enjoying them within 3–4 days.
Can I freeze the cookie dough?
Yes! You can portion the dough into individual cookie balls before freezing, making it easy to bake just a few cookies whenever you want.
Let the frozen dough thaw in the refrigerator before baking. The baking time may vary slightly depending on the temperature of the dough.
